- “Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell
George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair) is considered a modern master of prose style. Along with Ernest Hemingway, John Updike, and others, Orwell helped to establish the conventions of contemporary prose writing. The essay above, “Politics and the English Language,” is Orwell’s most systematic explanation of these conventions, but his concern for clear and honest communication is evident in nearly all of his other works, notably his novels Animal Farm and 1984.
